One of my favorite restaurants in the world for traditional steak, mashed potatoes, & Cesar salad is a little place out in Scarborough called T-Bones Steak House. At first glance the place looks like a greasy diner and could use a new coat of paint. The smell of steak on an open fire grill can be smelled for blocks. As you walk in you notice a small older Trinidadian lady working behind the counter. My first time ever being there I was a bit skeptical, but never the less you can’t judge a book by its cover. So, I walked up to the counter to order, the cute lady burst’s out “what’s your name love” with an island accent, I say “Jean-Paul” she looks at me with this devilish smile and says “like the singer Sean Paul” and starts dancing in front of the cash register, I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. After ordering a 20 oz T-bone steak dinner for $20 dollars which is an amazing price she tells me “I will never forget your name, and I never forget a face.” With a huge smile, I grabbed a table and waited eagerly for my meal. A few minutes passed ding went the sound of a bell, and a voice shouted from behind the counter “20 OZ T-BONE HERE”, I quickly ran back to my table with my steak in hand. The steak was perfectly cooked, beside was two huge scoops of whipped mashed potatoes, gravy, and a mountain of cesar salad. Ha-ha I caught myself sucking on the bone at the end of the meal. This little experience took place a little over five years ago, and to this day I’m still a happy customer. There is something about that interaction that I will never forget. Oh, and that cute little lady never forgot my name and we have become quite good friends.
Does tipping really make a difference? Well in my experience yes definitely, I thought I have had my fair share of bad customer service or bad wait staff, little did I know when I was shortly to arrive in Paris my perception on tipping your waiter was about to change.

After a very long flight, and even worse plane food I was starving, we reached the hotel I dropped my bags and the lady and I headed for a night out in Paris. When we first walked up to the restaurant I noticed a bit of a line and didn’t think anything of it, I did notice the hostess on her phone with little to no care of the people outside in the cold waiting to get in. We waited patiently and were brought to our table, the restaurant was very beautiful and had a bit of an Italian theme with meat hanging from the ceiling, and huge wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano stacked wall to wall on shelves. We threw our coats to the side and before we could sit down the waitress had brought two glasses of water and the menu’s for us, service was quick and she was very polite. Seemed to be a great start to dinner I thought to myself. After 20 minutes or so of looking at the menu and wondering where our waitress went I knew what I wanted to order. 35 minutes rolls around and I start to become annoyed, the wife could see by the look on my face that I was not a happy camper. She then leans over to my side of the table and whispers “there is no tipping in Paris so the service is horrible”. I thought at first awesome I don’t have to tip sweet, and then it dawned on me. I glanced around the room and saw a bunch of employees standing around chatting and customers waiting to be served. I guess the ideology is the food will come when it comes, and the wait staff doesn’t care about customer service because they are being paid the same regardless. I quickly shot out of my seat and set off to find my waitress, I found her chatting with a few of the employees in the back of the restaurant. I walked up grabbed her hand and slipped her a 20-euro bill, the look on her face was total confusion. I told her this is your tip in advance for being our waitress and I think we are ready to order. Her energy changed very quickly, she was kind, and courteous with a little more desire in her eyes, and personality in her step. To make a long story short after tipping we had a fabulous dinner with amazing service. Now I know everyone complains about having to tip I did it myself all the time, but if you see the service industry when we don’t have to tip, you wouldn’t think twice about tossing your wait staff a few bucks. Believe me.

It was a cold and winter day the season was gearing up for Christmas and all through the malls people were scurrying about trying to get their last minute shopping done . I was wearing a smile from ear to ear as I put the finishing touches on the girlfriends present. The bow was so big you could see it from space. I walked over to your local post office or should I say I skipped down to the post office gleaming with cheer. I asked the lovely lady behind the counter of the post office if she could help me send this package? She looked at the bow and agreed with a smile knowing it was for someone special. She proceeded to hand me a bill for a $180 dollars saying the package will be delivered in 5 days. My eye’s shot out of my head, so I opted out of the fast travel and decided to do the three month route for half the price $90 dollars no problem I thought . It would be spring when she got the package I thought haha as I chuckled to myself merry xmas haha. Three months rolled around and still no package. So I decided to call Canada post to figure out what was going on with the package I sent. I called customer service and was connected with the rudest customer service employee I have ever spoken with, not to make things worse but when I asked about my package and gave him my tracking number he had no idea what I was talking about. I just starred at the phone with amazement thinking am I really talking to Canada Post right now? And where if my package? After a brief moment, he puts me on hold for 15 minutes now I’m steaming mad. He says that he doesn’t know where my package is and he needs to open an investigation. He then apologises and say they will call me back with a result in 24 hrs. Ya five days go by no call of course. I call them back they then send me a letter via email stating they wont have an answer for another 30 – 60 days from the day I called. I am still waiting for my call from Canada Post. What bothers me is your Canada Post. Your not some fly by night small company your Canada Post you deal with everyone’s mail so tell me why you have not implicated a better way of tracking the package when it’s sent? I am so flabbergasted I can’t even think of a solution. If anyone has any ideas of a good solution for Canada Post please speak up or if you have had similar experiences please feel free to share.

I wanted ramen noodles for breakfast, I know I had a weird craving at the time but they wanted breakfast so I agreed. We ended up going to a greasy diner called lakeview in Toronto.
It was Saturday morning I woke up early, called a few of the boys to go out for breakfast in downtown Toronto. I drove down and picked them up in my old beater of a car. I wanted ramen noodles for breakfast, I know I had a weird craving at the time but they wanted breakfast so I agreed. We ended up going to a greasy diner called lakeview in Toronto. The three of us walked into the diner and I could feel the grease in the air as I entered, I already had a bad feeling about the restaurant. We sat down I ordered a cesear, the boys joined with a cesear of their own, not the salad but the drink. I figured it is the best way to start the morning ha ha. The cesears arrived quickly and was very tasty, so we decided to order breakfast. My one buddy ordered pancakes, and my other buddy and myself both ordered your traditional breakfast eggs, sausage, bacon, and toast. The waiter comes with our orders and the pancakes look fantastic but the breakfast we had ordered on the other hand looked over cooked, rubbery, and the sausages looked like dried little prunes. We tried to keep our mouths shut but honestly, we couldn’t. I spoke up and asked first some new sausages to be polite and at least just finish my breakfast and never come back, the waiter rudely agreed and came back slammed the plate of the table with three more sausages that were ten times worse. I shot out of my seat and said that’s it I want the bill. She threw the bill at us, we paid with no tip and stormed out of the restaurant hungry and left with the feeling of disgrace. We are surely never to return to that grease pit and will be getting a bad review if I am ever asked about the restaurant. Thanks Lakeview for the worst breakfast ever.

So one of the most memorable times I have had in customer service was in Italy. The wife and I were traveling to Italy seeing the sights. One of the stops was in Pisa, Italy to obviously see the leaning tower of Pisa. Which was amazing by the way, after taking a bunch of pictures and walking for what seemed like forever, we were starting to get hungry. So we set off in search of food and after walking through walk ways, and alleys we came to a square. We noticed in the far corner of the square the was a tiny wooden door, as we got closer we noticed thank goodness it was food. We walked in and it was around the ending of lunch time and everything was closing up, so we quickly grabbed a seat and with our very poor Italian we ordered. Not sure exactly what we ordered we waited patiently, 10 minutes later the waiter walks around the corner with home made lasagna for myself and a beautiful seafood pasta for my wife. The wife and I stuffed our faces with delight, the food was absolutely amazing. After dinner, we noticed an old man probably in his late 80’s early 90’s walking around greeting everyone and taking pictures I have to admit I was curious. I stood up and asked him who are you, to my question he replied I am the owner and the chef and yelled for his wife. His wife who was almost the same age came around and greeted us with open arms. It then became apparent this was a family run and owned business and most of the people who ate in the restaurant were family and near by neighbors. We spoke for about 20 minutes as he offered shots and biscotti over family that he had who lived in Canada. At the end of the lunch we exchanged hugs and left with huge smiles on our faces. We will always remember the little hole in the wall restaurant who treated us like we were familia. That is good customer service. Thank you Pisa.
